Texas was largely unnoticed for most of the colonization efforts. The first settlers arrived only in the end of the 17^th century. The US became interested in the territories after their purchase of Louisiana from France. In the beginning of the 19^th century Texas was incorporated in the newly formed Mexican state.  More European settlers were attracted to counter the constant Comanche raids. In 1835 the Texas Revolution started. Using political turmoil within Mexico the local population fought its way to independence. The revolution proclaimed the Republic of Texas but had to flee suddenly after the successful military campaign of the Mexican President de Santa Anna. After continued discussions about the future of the republic and short military interventions from neighboring Mexico, it was decided to annex the state to the United States. This happened officially in 1845 with a decision of the US Congress. Tensions about border claims led to the start of the Mexican-American War. After several decisive victories of the American forces, the Mexican government agreed to hand complete control over the state for the price of 18 million American dollars. The border was set at the Rio Grande. The current lines of the state were set in 1850. During the American Civil War Texas sided with the Confederacy. The state assumed the role of a supply party in the fighting providing troops, supplies and valuable trade through Mexico.

Things changed dramatically in the beginning of the 20^th century with the first discoveries of oil in the state. Texas saw several ups and downs in its economy during the century caused by the huge profits from oil, the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and the World War II.
